On the SCK-CEN site in Mol, the Design Team developed an overall Masterplan for the ‘Linear Particle Accelerator’ project (MINERVA) within the larger MYRRHA program, sharing a vision towards the future developement of the SCK-CEN site.
Lees meerApart from an obvious desire for Architectural Quality, the spearpoints of our design focused on maximal security and passive minimisation of risks and hazards, considering the radioactivity generated by the equipment. Ambitions for a cohesive integration of the future developement in the architectural patrimony are materialised through oriëntation and reference.
The shape of the LINear particle ACcellerator, strictly follows the functionality. LINAC, the heart of the installation, is facilitated by all other infrastructure at MINERVA. As an underground facility, it is not directly visible on site. Visually, a limited number of parallel office buildings are highlighted, conceived as direct plug-ins to the LINAC. Where possible, technical buildings are integrated into the raised landscape, their appearance maximally dematerialised.
The MASTERPLAN has flexibility built into it; free areas (‘building slots’) are foreseen for MYRRHA extensions, while at the same time offering much needed continuïty, conservation & revalidation of existing landscape quality and repair of the natural environment.
The use a few well-selected materials make for a coherent design and integrates respectfully into the heritage. Concrete elements refer to the characteristic architecture on site, while the rusty brown patina of CORT-TEN steel correlates with the trunks of pine in the surrounding forest.
